Exam week

It’s exam week in a pandemic. Thankfully, the exam format is MCQ. I could just eeny-meeny-minie-mo if I don’t know the answers. I am also thankful that I am not on weekend duty at the Covid Assessment Centre (CAC). I could do some revisions, sample questions and tips from the forum. I tried to read my modules in the car in between my patients as I go on my mobile vaccine outreach activity. However it is quite difficult to focus.

Thus, I am relying heavily on my assignment scores. For HUbungan Etnik it amounts up to 70% of the total marks. MCQ makes up for the rest of the 30%. Is it wishful thinking to hope for an A (moon) and if I don’t, I land in the stars (B)?

One paper down, 2 more to go

Hey there, it’s exam week.

I managed to squeeze in my online exam for subject ABCC1103 during my long lunch hour break today. I was worried that I couldn’t make it tonight but turns out it’s not that exhausting tonight. The format for the online exam are MCQs with a time limit of 90 minutes.

I recognized some of the questions from our online quiz a few weeks earlier. Some gave off the vibe like the questions we answer in our weekly E-lessons. It seems that Language is a popular theme. So is mass media. It took me just over an hour to answer the MCQ as I had to rush back to work. In other words, tembak je lah. After submitting my answers, I quickly prayed Zuhur and drove back to the clinic.

Next week is all about psychology. I have planned to take leave on the 20th so that I could sit for the online exam with a peace of mind. Lepas tu kita ronggenggg! Vincenzo Cassano, I cannot wait.

English paper. A take home examination

If you have a strong hunch. Follow it. It could save your life.

That is how I would describe my OUMH1203 English for Written Communication exam paper. It was in essay format and before the exam date, I have printed out the sample questions a week in advance and attempted it. It was quite an OK trial paper to be completed in about 2 hours plus.

However, format has changed in view of the new norm.

The exam question is readily accessible online from 10am on Sunday and the answers are to be handed in before 10am on the Monday. Candidates have 24 hours to complete the paper. In my mind, I had this thought of why lar paper keluar hari ahad.. why not a monday. Turns out there was a good reason for it.

Initially I had wanted to attempt the paper at night once the kids are asleep. It was a coincidence however, for that particular Sunday – my husband did not have to go to work or collect rent and run errands. Instead he was so free that he just wanted to stay indoors and cook lunch. So I thought it would be great if he minded the kids whilst I download the paper.

I WAS SO GLAD I DID THAT AT ABOUT 11AM.

For I was in shock when I read the questions. In gist, I have to write 4 different essays with about 800 -1000 words each! I tried hard not to panic although I knew that if you have no inspiration, you can’t pen down your thoughts. My 4 essays are about;

  1. MCO ; its cause and effects
  2. social networking application imposing a negative behaviour on children and teenagers
  3. saving the environment
  4. adult workers pursuing higher education and its effects on the economy and family

I was technically in my study area for the rest of the day with few interruptions in between. Things like going to the loo, having lunch, washing my daughters no 2, distracted by Shopee, resting my brain on the couch etc. Can you imagine how I would have felt if I decided to attempt the paper at night? Sedangkan assignment 3000 words pun I need about a month to complete, what more these in 24 hours. Now I worry if we are required to cite our references in the essay. That would be a bummer because I surely did not cite any. Mana nak ingat.

I finally completed my essay by 1am in the morning and dreaded going to work today. My head is still woozy at this hour. By the way, I have just completed my online MCQ exam for the Principles of Management subject a few minutes ago. That was a timed session of 90 minutes. Terpaksa basuh berak Ninie laju2 sebab tak nak rugi masa. Masa Mummy tengah amek examlah dia nak berak jugak.

I am making a mental note that for the next exam season, I will try to apply for leave. This is because next semester I will be having 4 subjects. Boleh stress macam ni. Terus jadi gemuk balik after all my Biggest Loser effort. Its hard to tell if I did well for both subjects. I am crossing my fingers to at least pass the courses. My last subject for examination will be Psychology this Wednesday.

Wish me luck.

Exam Week Start

Exam week starts tomorrow. I will be starting with English For Written Communication, Principles of Management and finally Psychology. I am so glad that Psychology has an MCQ format for this semester. At least, I can find a trigger in my brain for the correct answer. I don’t think I can write an essay say, on the biodata for Wilhelm Wundt.

I am a bit nervous about my English paper. It is one of the subjects where you think you know a lot of but ended up failing it anyway. It reminds me of the a subject I failed being a medical student in Manchester. The task was to summarize a journal in 100 words. Mencabar. Thankfully, I passed for my second attempt.

I loved Principles of Management. I couldn’t help evaluating the management style of my superior after that. And how it could be better.

I cannot wait for this week to be over so that I could finish up on my management essay and hand it in. Then, I will have at least a one week break before I pulun and pull off a studying strategy for my 3rd semester. In between, I am looking forward to 2 stay cations in the city.

My assignment marks are out

I am satisfied with my marks and comments made by the examiner. I acknowledge that there are areas that needs improvement especially the formatting and referencing part. Nama pun belajar kan.. so learn we must. Awal2 memang tak perfect lagi.

My assignment for Tamadun Islam dan Tamadun Asia, TITAS (MPU3323) on Nujum Pak Belalang scored 56.75% over a total of 70%. I did the task diligently, following the rubric guidelines attached to it. I feel that even if you are at lost at what to write, the rubric can help you. Aim for the best column mark because it seems that even in the best column, there are gradings from a weak-strong to a strong-strong point.

As you can see, my APA part needed more work.

My sources to help me for the TITAS write-up were mostly online journals but I got help with regards to the language form from books at the Melaka public library. I read on Malay literatures and proper DBPish magazines just to get a nice lenggok to the language. In a way, I can insert peribahasa, kiasan and perumpaan’s appropriately in my essay to make it a nice read. So that bila baca ada macam pantun or gurindam sikit. We want the examiner to feel intrigued and delighted to read our essay.

My other assignment is for the Learning Skills (OUMH1603) subject around Good Citizenship EDucation (GCED) and I chose the topic of Biodiversity. I have probably said it a lot of times, I really enjoyed writing about it and I made sure my examiner knew about it. Again, my guide is the rubric chart provided alongside the assignment. I achieved 50.25% over a total of 60% for this.

In this assignment, I highlighted the problem of Periuk Kera near extinction with regards to the Lemang Periuk Kera and of an individual, Jadav ‘Molai’ Payeng who replanted a forest in India. One of the most helpful sources I looked into while writing about this is the Biodiversity Course playlist on the California Academy of Sciences channel on YouTube. I understood the theories from our OUM handbook better after watching the videos. YouTube is an excellent resource for assignment write-ups. You can use the words and even some great sentences because it does not go through the similarity check unless it is written down somewhere and available on the internet.

All assignments go through a similarity check and different ranges of percentage warrants respective mark deductions. Since both of my essays had less than 30% , no marks were deducted. If say, a student has between 30.01 – 50% from the check, 5 marks are deducted and the list goes on. It is just not worth it. Do the assignments on your own, do not hire third party help. Do not copy a friends essay even though they are at a different learning centre. Write from the brain with passion. LOL.

I can’t give access to my essays at the moment.

Not until I have gotten my marks from other parts of the examination. Once I am pass that, only then I can upload my essay. Thank you for your understanding. I hope my other results are OK too. Wish me luck.
