We don’t have an MCQ paper or written exam for this subject. However, the assignment is mega important because it carries 100% of our final marks. Madam Munah my lovely e-tutor said that if we do it right, InsyaAllah we can get high marks for the subject. And I really want to do well.

I had a different idea in the beginning but had to improvise given my circumstances. There’s the COVID-19 threat, the sampling roster, the klinik desa rotation and the husbands placement for his specialist post. Anyway, here is what I managed to come up with and I really hope that the examiner would love it and give constructive comments.

English paper. A take home examination

If you have a strong hunch. Follow it. It could save your life.

That is how I would describe my OUMH1203 English for Written Communication exam paper. It was in essay format and before the exam date, I have printed out the sample questions a week in advance and attempted it. It was quite an OK trial paper to be completed in about 2 hours plus.

However, format has changed in view of the new norm.

The exam question is readily accessible online from 10am on Sunday and the answers are to be handed in before 10am on the Monday. Candidates have 24 hours to complete the paper. In my mind, I had this thought of why lar paper keluar hari ahad.. why not a monday. Turns out there was a good reason for it.

Initially I had wanted to attempt the paper at night once the kids are asleep. It was a coincidence however, for that particular Sunday – my husband did not have to go to work or collect rent and run errands. Instead he was so free that he just wanted to stay indoors and cook lunch. So I thought it would be great if he minded the kids whilst I download the paper.

For I was in shock when I read the questions. In gist, I have to write 4 different essays with about 800 -1000 words each! I tried hard not to panic although I knew that if you have no inspiration, you can’t pen down your thoughts. My 4 essays are about;

  1. MCO ; its cause and effects
  2. social networking application imposing a negative behaviour on children and teenagers
  3. saving the environment
  4. adult workers pursuing higher education and its effects on the economy and family

I was technically in my study area for the rest of the day with few interruptions in between. Things like going to the loo, having lunch, washing my daughters no 2, distracted by Shopee, resting my brain on the couch etc. Can you imagine how I would have felt if I decided to attempt the paper at night? Sedangkan assignment 3000 words pun I need about a month to complete, what more these in 24 hours. Now I worry if we are required to cite our references in the essay. That would be a bummer because I surely did not cite any. Mana nak ingat.

I finally completed my essay by 1am in the morning and dreaded going to work today. My head is still woozy at this hour. By the way, I have just completed my online MCQ exam for the Principles of Management subject a few minutes ago. That was a timed session of 90 minutes. Terpaksa basuh berak Ninie laju2 sebab tak nak rugi masa. Masa Mummy tengah amek examlah dia nak berak jugak.

I am making a mental note that for the next exam season, I will try to apply for leave. This is because next semester I will be having 4 subjects. Boleh stress macam ni. Terus jadi gemuk balik after all my Biggest Loser effort. Its hard to tell if I did well for both subjects. I am crossing my fingers to at least pass the courses. My last subject for examination will be Psychology this Wednesday.

Wish me luck.

A stare down at my essays

The deadline for 2 of my essays is on the 2nd of August 2020 and my management paper is due on the 23rd of August 2020. So here’s the simple plan.

To submit my Psychology & English assignment by the 30th of July and then focus on my management essay afterward.

This is because Eid Adha will fall on the 31st of July and the Moss clan is planning to have fun at a nearby homestay with a private pool. Kids love staycations like that. Mandi sampai jadi kismis.

Now that the plan is in place, I just need to squeeze my effort in between clinic sessions and my weekends. Undeniably, my assignments this semester are a bit challenging. So let’s just face it with grit.

Semester 2. Finding the ropes

Due to COVID-19, all of our learning will be conducted online. Apart from the usual e-module, forums and virtual lectures, we now have E-tutorials conducted via GoogleMeet. Seems that my husbands gift to me of a pair of headphones will be put to good use.

I like to get a an overview or outline of the things I hope to study. This semester I hope to become more organized in my schedules. So, after downloading the OUM modules to my laptop and Google Drive, I made a list of the topics and tasks required for each subject.

Guess what?

I just realized this semester that on top of my student email (via Google), I actually get a whole new Google Drive with it too. Meaning, I could keep all my learning materials there whilst having a separate one for my personal use. Uh-may-zing.

Once I have listed down the topics, I try to plan my reading of the topics in my planner. As I am unsure of how much reading is required of each topic, I try to put 1 or 2 topics weekly for each subject over a span of at least 8 weeks. This is so I could have some time to prepare for my exams at the end of the semester. Plus, you never know what might crop up work-wise since I am still working full time.

I find that the subject of History and Philosophy of Psychology to be a challenging read because it is narrative in nature. It’s like a story. And for someone like me who needs to grasp things in point form, will need to develop skills to read between the lines and find the intended meaning. With that in mind, I need to make an effort to REMEMBER when my e-tutorials are as I tend to sleep very early at night. The recent 1st tutorial for Psychology by my e-tutor Mr Manimaran helped to put things into perspective for my learning. Too bad, all of us learners couldn’t join him for that session because of some connection glitch. I hope to join in for the 2nd session next week. It is very fruitful.

I am also actively searching for tutorial videos on Youtube to help me understand the topic better. I will share those videos if I ever find them. In a few hours, I will be having another GoogleMeet tutorial. This time with the library team with the hope to polish my skills in searching for literature and writing up my references well with the APA format style.

It is raining cats and dogs at the moment. I really hope that my internet connection will be stable.

Front row seats

Can you smell the enthusiasm? I have brought out my Psych notes out from The Files. Ready to face Semester 2 of my studies.

My friend, a Masters student and myself are checking our study portals almost everyday for updates and a glimpse of our tutorial handbooks. He was more steadfast and lagi rajin I suppose, cause he watsapped the learning centre himself asking of his module. Turned out both of us missed the memo that study period will commence on the 11th of June and exam period will be around August. Our nerdiness could not be contained.

He is probably like myself, the front row seat occupiers.

I often choose to sit in the front row seat because I am short and it is easier for me to see the board or any form of practical demonstration. Questions are rarely thrown to front row seat students although the risk of being first to present something is 50/50. I also have a problem in my hearing of which I need to get up close to the lecturer and if possible see his/her lip movement while speaking. I’ve had an audiogram before to assess this problem. My hearing results are fine despite this struggle. Maybe it is a confidence thing. (gosh)

Just the other day another colleague asked me if it is possible for me to even finish this course even if it is not on time? I understood his concerns with the kind of work we are doing daily on top of our familial duties. Now that learning activities have differed with the invasion of Covid-19, students are in a way affected to a certain degree. It was to me, not a condescending question but more of an inquisitive one.

I braved a smile behind my mask and said, “InsyaAllah OK, OUM after all is pretty much online already. We will pull through”
